I love to sing. Back when I was involved with the Little Red Studio, there were a few skits I organized where we formed a choir and sang. Those are still my favourite experiences of all 8 years at the Studio.
I miss the Studio. Something fierce. I miss being surrounded by so many artists of so many flavours. I miss the collaborations. I miss learning new skills. Hell, I even miss wrangling said artists when I was the director. All that can be summed up: I miss being caught up in the creative energy of a vibrant arts community.
So, I am going to go find myself a choir to sing in. I love singing. I'm not great at it so perhaps I'll sign up at one of the local community colleges so I can get a wee bit of coaching. I don't want to become a professional. I do want to perform, but only for the joy of sharing music. I just want to sing. With lots of other people. (If I didn't have to sit through a church service, I would rather join a church choir because they have the best songs.)
Maybe I could gather up all the people who joined voices with me at LRS for a reunion choir to sing "I'll Fly Away".

I am very excited about tonight's show. We have an interesting evening laid out before us. Interesting in that the threads that shook out during rehearsal are movement, voice and bondage.
The bondage will feature Punzel & TwistedMonk. Among the movement aspects of the evening, we offer contact improv dance and knife juggling. Poetry, song, comedy, and the story behind Jeff's grand altar piece, Suffering Change, will fill your ears while your eyes drink in the luscious sights. I am very excited to have Suffering Change opened for viewing. This is a rare treat for us all!

Rambling on a rehearsal day.
I am starting to feel settled in as the Director for Little Red Studio. Going from a volunteer to paid staff has been difficult for me. The Studio has always been about doing what I want to do. Having and element of obligation has been irritating. Which is strange, since I really don't want to not be involve with the Studio. It's the idea that I have to do something that feels weird.
I think the biggest element in this feeling awkward has to do with the philosophy that is the basis for why LRS is so special. There is a book called The Gift by Lewis Hyde
that talks about the importance of being in the gift economy when doing anything creative or erotic in order to grow the energy. It's akin to the saying "You have to love in order to be loved" or any other truism that suggests that you have to give away something in order to receive something. And this is gifting I am referring to; not trade. When you trade, you expect something back. When you give a gift, for it to truly be a gift, you must expect nothing in return, including an acknowledgment. Jeff once wrote an essay about this philosophy that you can read here.
When I became a paid staff member, the portion of my LRS involvement that is administrative in nature was pulled out of the gift economy and thrust into the money economy. And that makes sense. Jeff needs to know that this work will get done at a certain time and in a certain way. One can't have those expectations when in the gift economy. My art and performances will still be in the gift economy and I am glad of that so I can reap the benefits of increase that come with the act of giving away that energy. That is something I will not give up. That is an integral part of being involved with the Little Red Studio for me.
So, tonight I go and do my duty as the Director. And tomorrow, I play at being the Director. A small distinction, but one that was important for me to make for myself in this transition since I am performing less often.
Little Red Studio tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets for $25 until 6pm the day of a show. We then have tickets available at the door between 8 and 9pm for $30. Since we set the program the night before, I can't tease you with what the show will be like until the day of the show. If you are curious. Check back tomorrow and I'll post a sneak peek.

The Little Red Studio is very proud to bring you this show for it's third run.
Please join us this coming Valentine's weekend for our newest production of the Red Show!
An intriguing journey into the world of Verotica143 and a wonderful way to celebrate Valentine's Day... A world of beauty, excitement and artifice where passion and sexual energy run high, not everyone is who they seem to be, and where Eros holds the power to transform the ordinary into magical.
I'll be working the box office, so do make sure to say hi! This is a great show. A little less interactive than most Studio shows, with the dance party happen after the end of the how.

Another show tomorrow- um, I mean, today.
I'm winding down from LRS rehearsal, waiting for the sugar and adreniline to work out of my system enough to sleep. There were a few real moments of fear. I had 2 people email me during the day to let me know they wouldn't be able to perform due to illness and another dancer show up with a hurt foot. She's a trooper, though, as she is going to sing in the show.
Understudies are a rare thing in the Studio. Mostly due to the fact that each performer is also the pregenitor of their act. And so much of the art that is birthed in the Studio is of a personal nature. Each artist and performer is keen to be the one to show off their art. I certainly don't mind waiting.
One of our artists broke her foot at the last LRS show in December. She did an amazingly dynamic monologue on a "shark board". She gets bonus points and a smack upside the head for finishing her act after being injured. No one that I have talked to even knew that it had happened; she never even lost her composure or her lines. She is back with an act that depends on her having a broken foot. She's a nut and I am honoured to get to see her push through adveristy to perform.
One of our acts is a pair of lovelies who want a live run through of the act they are preparing for "Bang For the Buck!" which is coming up fast on January 30th. Super hot!
My co-director and I are without a stage manager tonight, so we will be taking on those duties. We have come up with pair of characters and costumes to make the set changes a lot more fun. I don't want to give it away, so I won't say too much. Let's just say it's a good thing her twin sister is in the military.
It's going to be a fun show! If you don't have Friday night plans, then come visit the Little Red Studio. $25 advance tickets are available online until 6pm at Brown Paper Tickets. $30 at the door. Show starts at 9pm.
Maybe take advantage of the brand new dinner menu in the Little Red Bistro before hand. The Bistro's new dinner options are 1/2 off this weekend only. I have had the scallops plate which was divine! The sauce was flavourful and mellow and the scallops themselves were not fishy tasting and the texture was perfection!
Thinking about my dinner tonight is making me hungry again. I need to go to bed so it can be morning soon. See you at the show tonight!

I need a new title.
Names are very important to me. Each job I have had, if it was a good and fun job, came with an interesting title. Now, sometimes this meant I had to rework the job title a smidge.
When I first started working at LRS, I was Jeff's personal assistant and my title was Grrrl Friday. A strong spin on a sexist job title. While I was the Spa Manager, I took up the moniker "Spa Queen" since I was in charge and made all the rules. A friend thought that title inadequate and dubbed me "The Anit-Gravity Masseuse of Doom." Which has a great ring to it and now that I am not the Spa Manager, is still applicable to my massaging-in-water proclivities.
But now I am the Director of the Little Red Studio shows. So dry and academic. In my zeal to bring back old conventions I teasingly referred to myself as Frau Direktor. That is not quite right, so I am still looking. I want it to be a light-hearted, "I'm not really taking myself seriously but you should" type of title.
Suggestions should be amusing, witty and offered with the idea that it has an equal chance of being ignored or applied literally. Thank you for playing!

Doing the happy dance!
Last night I had another rehearsal for the aerial bondage performance piece that will be in this Friday's Little Red Studio. The choreography we had set down last week came together quite nicely. Between the three of us, we were able to create a way to tell the story with only actions, as the song is mostly there to convey mood.
One of the things we have to keep in mind is how to conserve my energy. I can perform this type of aerial work for 3-4 minutes. What makes it difficult for me to go longer is holding my core contracted for that whole time. The more dynamic tricks I do, the more chance I have to use different muscles and let my core rest. In this act, I am still much of the time, just holding a pose while I fly around. Very strenuous. Since the song we are using is over 6 minutes, we have to be smart about choreography I want to be able to make it though the whole act without collapsing until I am supposed to at the end.
I am glad the Mean Man is available to perform with me again. His last job precluded the possibility since he worked on show nights. Keeping up with my training has been difficult with no goal to work towards. Now that we will be performing regularly again, that will get me back on track.
If you can't see us this Friday at LRS, you have another chance this month. We are performing a different act on New Year's Eve and the Center for Sex Positive Culture. They have us scheduled to perform early in the evening, probably around 9:15pm. This particular act is a little more gritty and more raw and high energy.

Gold show on Friday the 18th
This month's Little Red Studio show is going to be jam packed with an incredible amount of performance. Normally we try to keep a nice even keel of art and socializing/participation. This time, so many people have come forth with so many great acts that we just may have to extend the evening a bit.
Personally, I am so excited, I am having a hard time focusing on all the directing of everyone else I am supposed to be doing. I will be performing with the Mean Man for the first time in quite a while. We have spent the last month reworking the aerial bondage piece we did in the Obsidian Show last winter.
Ok, how do I tell you about this without giving too much away if you didn't see the piece last year? It is the same idea of the marionette, but minus two and a change of two characters. My dear friend, Christina, an operatically trained singer, will also be a marionette as she sings "Something I Can Never Have" by Nine Inch Nails, while accompanied by Chris on the piano, who just happens to be the former lead music dude for Jet City Improv. I am indeed blessed to have such talented friends.
If you have the evening free, please come check it out. There are going to be skits, a beautiful blonde singing "Santa Baby", 2 different aerial acts, and so much more for you to gaze upon, as well as have a chance to join in the fun.
